Salem announces free three-day theatre camp

June 14, 2021 by Allysha Dunnigan

SALEM — Salem’s Arts & Culture Program announced a free, three-day theatre camp for city youth in the Old Town Hall and Derby Square from July 21-23, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This camp, in partnership with Cambridge-based experimental theatre ensemble Liars and Believers, is for Salem residents ages 7 to 17.

The camp can accept up to 30 participants, and slots will be assigned on a first-come-first-served basis.

Participants are encouraged to bring lunch, snacks, sunscreen, water and a face mask. The camp will be held outdoors in Derby Square, but if it rains, the camp will be moved inside the Old Town Hall, where masks are required to be worn.

In this camp, participants will learn some of the basic skills needed to be a creative and expressive theatre artist.

Each day, campers will learn the fundamentals of improv, puppetry and clowning; will build their own puppets, and learn how to make them come alive; create their own clown character and go home with a clown nose of their own.

At the end of the three-day session, Liars and Believers will present their show, “Yellow Bird Chase,” to the community for free on Saturday, July 22 at noon.

After the performance, camp participants will join the professional cast to show off their new theatrical skills.

Liars and Believers was founded in 2009 and creates original, live shows with music, movement, masks, poetry, puppets, video, clowning, live bands, aerialists and swords. Liars and Believers is committed to making art accessible in as many ways as possible.

“We tell stories that explore what it means to be human in this world we share,” representatives said. “We recognize the historic inequities in our society, our industry and our own company. We acknowledge the pain and injustices felt by BIPOC communities and we are committed to addressing them. We must use our voices to lift others.”
