After getting through a shortened regular season with a 7-2 record and a Greater Boston League title, the Lynn English baseball team took home multiple awards Wednesday, including Most Valuable Player and Coach of the Year.
Bulldogs senior third baseman Angel Gonzalez took home the MVP honors, while first-year head coach Esteban Paula was named Coach of the Year.
Gonzalez was the go-to guy for the English offense this season, batting a stellar .435 with an on-base percentage of .629 and an eye-popping OPS of 1.455. His one home run, two doubles, two triples and eight RBI all helped give him a slugging percentage of .826.
But he didn’t only contribute with his bat. Gonzalez also performed on the mound, pitching 10 2/3 innings over four appearances and going 3-0. He also notched one save, totaling 15 strikeouts for the year and posting an ERA of 1.31.
Paula takes home Coach of the Year in his first season at the helm for English. A Bulldogs alum, Paula previously served as an assistant coach under the late Doug Mullins, who died from cancer last October at age 34.
In addition to the two major awards, the league awarded the Sportsmanship Award to the Chelsea baseball team.
The GBL also named an All-Conference Team, made up of Yordi Contreras (Lynn English), Clodys Prandys (Lynn English), Ethaniel Almendarez (Lynn Classical), Nico Galeazzi (Lynn Classical), Max Doucette (Revere), Mike Popp (Revere), Aidan Barry (Medford), Dante Giambusso (Medford), Shawn Nestor (Medford), AJ Rourke (Medford), Christian Oliviera (Somerville) and Brandon McMahon (Malden).
