Lynn YMCA to host senior cookout

LYNN — Time to get your grill on: The city and Senior Center are hosting a senior cookout at the Demakes Family YMCA next week on Wednesday, June 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The cookout, which is primarily for Lynn residents 60 years of age and older, will offer free food, beverages and COVID-19 vaccines.

Local businesses and politicians will also be in attendance, giving the seniors a much-needed opportunity to socialize after being cooped up for so long.

The city’s Director of Elder Services Chris Gomez said he wanted to plan this cookout because most seniors haven’t been able to host or attend gatherings for a while because of the pandemic.

Gomez said this cookout is a good way to focus on the senior community and create a space to interact, since the city is in the process of establishing a new senior center.

“With the restrictions for COVID-19 (lifting and) finally allowing us to do something, I wanted to try to do something big and fun with them,” Gomez said. “At the cookout, they’ll be able to mingle with friends, make some new friends, and ask the politicians and myself some questions.”

Gomez became the city’s director of elder services in April, and said he is excited to meet some new faces at next week’s event.
