SALEM — The Salem State University Board of Trustees has elected a new student trustee, recent transfer Zarais German-George.

German-George will serve as a student voice on the Salem State University’s Board of Trustees for the upcoming academic year. She transferred to Salem State in the fall of 2020 and is a dual major in criminal justice and psychology.

“I am honored to serve as student trustee and be a voice for my peers,” said German-George. “I am committed to advancing issues important to the student body and creating a campus environment where all people feel welcome and happy.”

German-George served as a senator in the Salem State Student Government Association, where she strived to advance social justice initiatives. Last school year, she also worked with the Inclusive Excellence Office to promote student-led projects in support of diversity, equity and inclusion.

She was a member of the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and Black History Month Collaborative as well as the Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Collaborative last school year. German-George is currently a member of the Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month Collaborative.

A native of Lowell, German-George also helps out at home as a member of the Citizen Advisory Committee to the Lowell Police Department and the Lowell Litter Krewe.

As a member of the Class of 2022, German-George also works part-time in the school’s institutional advancement office. With her new role as a student trustee, she will continue her work involving equity at the university.

“The student trustee plays a crucial role in ensuring the student voice is present in all of our conversations and decisions,” said Board of Trustees Chairman Rob Lutts. “I look forward to working with Trustee German-George to pursue the challenges and opportunities ahead in the upcoming academic year.”
