SAUGUS — On Thursday morning, gas leaked into the air on Bow Street.
A crew was doing utility work in the area and struck the gas lines at 10:15 a.m.
Residents nearby were forced to evacuate from their homes for a brief period of time as crews worked to fix the leak. Police Lt. Ronald Giorgetti said that at least 20 residents were forced to leave their homes.
National Grid was on the scene working on the issue and the leak was fixed at 12:19 p.m.
Residents told The Item that the smell was very strong and that the incident could have been a lot worse. One person said that supervisors on the project needed to be held accountable.
As recently as March, construction crews temporarily shut down Route 1 because of a high-pressure main break.
