SWAMPSCOTT — The high school girls soccer team this weekend made more than 125 sandwiches to donate to Lynn soup kitchen My Brother’s Table.
The team got together early Sunday morning to stuff lunch bags containing two peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches, peanut butter crackers, napkins, juice boxes and notes of encouragement for that afternoon’s lunch.
Team member and high school senior Maddie Hudson said that the community service project was a great way to bring the players together during the summer.
“A lot of our seniors were thinking about things to get the team together and help out the community,” she said. “A few of my friends and I on the team had done the PB and J sandwiches on our own before.”
Hudson said that when she was a freshman, the team had participated in a walk to promote and support My Brother’s Table, but that this was the first time they had done something like this
In addition, last year, the team led a food drive to donate to Swampscott’s Anchor Food Pantry, which opened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hudson said that the players reached out to community members through social media to solicit donations.
This year, the team plans to hold another drive to support Anchor at their Oct. 16 game at Blocksidge Field, and hope to again get support from the community and local businesses.
