New GALA exhibit celebrates intersection between Pop Art and Streetstyle

A new exhibit has popped up at the Gallery at LynnArts (GALA).

“Pop Art + Streetstyle,” featuring more than 60 pieces which show off the vibrant colors of the Pop Art movement, will be on display from Aug. 12 to Sept. 18.

“Streetstyle was a little bit about bringing the voice of the artist as an activist,” said exhibit curator Stefanie Timmermann, “and what we’ve seen, certainly in 2020, is how important activism is today.”

This activism can be seen in GALA President and Director Annette Sykes’ “Yarn-Bombed Tree,” an exhibit which Timmermann referred to as “an extension of Streetstyle” —  a grassroots art movement inspired by city life.

“I’ve taken the tree out of the natural environment, and I’ve commodified it. Now it’s a sculpture rather than a real tree and (it plays) with the idea of art being for everyone,” said Sykes.

On display simultaneously with “Pop Art + Streetstyle” is Lynn artist Malika MacDonald’s collaboration with GALA’s “Pop-Up@GALA” series, “Malika’s Modern Aged Art.” MacDonald’s work showcases her range in a diverse span of styles and mediums.

MacDonald wants her show to express that “we are all more similar than we believe” and hopes the exhibit will “break down those differences and bring people together around art.”

GALA will host an opening reception for both exhibitions on Friday, Aug. 13, from 5-8 p.m. and will feature tea and sweets from Morocco and music.
