LYNN — Bent Water brewery has released the third beer, “Crosscurrent,” in its Lynn tribute series.
This New England Indian Pale Ale pays homage to the city’s beach and shoreline.
The director of communications at Bent Water, Robin Leopoldo, said the shoreline is a big part of the city, with Lynn Shore Drive, Red Rock Park, King’s Beach, and views of Boston and the surrounding communities.
“For me, just because I do the drive to and from the brewery, I drive by the shoreline and the waves there are just crazy,” Leopoldo said.
Waves will sometimes splash over the sea wall during storms, as people pull over on Lynn Shore Drive to watch and take pictures and videos of the ocean’s beauty.
“It’s something that Lynn is known for — its shoreline,” Leopoldo said. “It’s been the inspiration for a lot of art, which is a huge part of Lynn, too.”
The beach has a sense of community, Leopoldo said, from gathering at the park for concerts or yoga, to walking dogs and going for runs or walks on Lynn Shore Drive.
“There’s constantly, throughout the year, people utilizing that stretch and to us, it just symbolizes community,” she said.
For each beer, the brewers come up with a new recipe and use different hops. For Crosscurrent, Bent Water’s Assistant Brewer Zach Nicastro used new German hops.
Nicastro said he wanted to put the new generation of German hops on display in Crosscurrent, using Hallertau Blanc and Hüll Melon to give this beer aromas of white grape, cantaloupe and a subtle hint of strawberry.
Leopoldo said flavors berry, grapefruit rind and resin come through on the palate.
The brewers have creative freedom and liberty to make the beer they want. The last two beers in the tribute series were “Timeless” and “Supercharger,” paying homage to the historic Diamond District and the first jet engine that was created in Lynn.
About 120 barrels worth of Crosscurrent is being distributed to stores Monday, but the beer was exclusively released on tap in Bent Water’s tap room Friday. Timeless is also still available in the tap room. Supercharger sold out.
“We’ve had such great reception from the community, the beer community in Lynn, with the Lynn tribute series,” Leopoldo said. “It’s definitely our intention to continue doing this in 2022 and brew new beers each time.”
The tap room has been closed since the pandemic, but reopened on Friday. The tap room will be open on Fridays from 3 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 8 p.m.
The fourth beer in the series will be a tribute to Lynn Woods and is set to be released in October.
