GLOUCESTER — The Lynn Classical golf team put together a solid performance in its season opener against Gloucester Monday afternoon, but in the end the Rams simply didn’t have enough depth and fell by a score of 47-25 in a non-conference matchup at Bass Rocks Golf Club.

“Obviously it wasn’t the result that we were looking for, but it was just great to get back out there and compete,” said Classical coach Jack Morrison. “Everyone was excited to get back and it was a great chance to see where we stand at this early part of the season.”

Classical had two wins and a tie on the day, starting with Brady Warren’s 5-4 victory in the No. 1 spot. Ryan Duggan followed that up with a 5 1/2-3 1/2 win in the No. 3 spot, while Ethan Chevalier ended up tying his match 4 1/2-4 1/2. And despite losing his match 3 1/2-5 1/2, Christian Spates put together a solid performance as well.

“I think we can take a lot away from this match,” said Morrison. “This early in the season, the biggest thing for us is knocking off the rust and trying to play as consistently as possible.”

While the result may not have been what Classical was looking for, Morrison knows that playing a talented team like the Fishermen early in the season will only benefit his squad moving forward.

“It’s always good to play good teams on good golf courses,” said Morrison. “With matches against the likes of Gloucester and Marblehead on courses like Bass Rocks and Tedesco, our guys are really testing themselves and getting better for the future.”

The Rams will have another tough test in a few days when they go on the road to Tedesco Country Club for another non-conference match against a strong Magicians team.

“The main thing I want our guys to focus on is thinking well out there on the course,” said Morrison. “I tell them that they have to know they’re going to hit bad shots once in a while, but if they can think the way around the course then they’ll be alright. That has to be our focus going forward.”

Classical (0-1) tees off against Marblehead Thursday afternoon (4).
