LYNN ― GE Aviation has received a five-year contract for up to $1.65 billion to repair, update, or replace engine components for the U.S. Navy’s F/A-18 aircraft fleet.
GE will support 17 F414 turbofan engine parts and will receive a $77 million initial delivery order, the Department of Defense said Wednesday.
“We greatly value our relationship with the U.S. Navy and appreciate their confidence in our F414,” said GE Aviation spokesman Richard Gorham. “We remain steadfastly committed to delivering the highest-quality parts and engines on time to support the Super Hornet and Growler fleets.”
The F414 engine, a turbofan jet engine that provides 22,000 pounds of thrust, is a key Lynn-based military engine, with multiple components built in the city and assembly and testing conducted in the Lynn facility. The engine line is directly and indirectly associated with several hundred jobs in the city, according to GE.
The engine powers the Navy’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter jet and EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft, along with a few international applications.
Ninety percent of the work associated with the contract will take place in Lynn, with the remaining work being done in Jacksonville, Florida.
DOD noted that the noncompetitive contract has no options.
