School Sports Roundup: KIPP boys soccer opens season with a win

The KIPP boys soccer team got its season started off on a great note Tuesday afternoon, notching an 8-0 win on the road against Innovation Academy. 

Marco Escobar picked up right where he left off in the spring, scoring three goals to pace the Panthers’ offense. Jefferson Paz added two goals, while Josue de Leon, Christian Bermudez Garcia and Chidindu Aniekwenagbu each scored a goal. Kenny de Leon added three assists in the winning effort, while goalkeeper Angel Lopez earned the shutout in net.

KIPP (1-0) will play its first home game of the season Wednesday (3:45) against Greater Lawrence at Manning Field. 

BOYS SOCCER

North Andover 6, Lynnfield 1

Lynnfield (0-1) travels to North Reading Friday evening (6).

Winthrop 8, Saugus 1

Winthrop was led by a five-goal performance from Gustav Hemmingson, while Mateo Martinez played a stellar game in net. 

Winthrop (1-0) travels to Marblehead Thursday night (7).

Saugus (0-1) hosts Gloucester Thursday (4:30).

GIRLS SOCCER

Saugus 4, Winthrop 2

Saugus (1-0) plays on the road at Gloucester Thursday (4).

Winthrop (0-1) hosts Marblehead Thursday evening (6).

GOLF

Lynn Classical 39 1/2, Somerville 32 1/2 

The Rams grabbed their first win of the season Tuesday behind a strong performance from Brady Warren, who shot 37 and won his match 5-4. Christian Spates (5 1/2-3 1/2) and Patrick McHale (7-2) scored big wins, while Ryan Dugan, Ethan Chevalier and Stevan Downey also won their respective matches. 

“The boys came to play (Tuesday),” said Classical coach Jack Morrison. “I’m very proud of the way everyone played, and it was a total team effort.”

Classical (1-1) takes on Lynn English Thursday (4) at Gannon Municipal Golf Course. 

VOLLEYBALL

Bishop Fenwick 3, Danvers 0

The Crusaders handed Danvers its first loss in three years on Tuesday, kicking the season off with an upset victory as home underdogs. 

Fenwick (1-0) travels to Marblehead Friday evening (5:30).
