Lynn Housing Authority hosts annual scholarship golf tournament

LYNN — The Lynn Housing Authority & Neighborhood Development (LHAND) hosted its 23rd annual Scholarship Golf Tournament at Gannon Municipal Golf Course Friday to raise funds for scholarships for Lynn students.

The LHAND has awarded more than $385,000 to high school seniors since the scholarship program began. In the past year, LHAND distributed $36,000 to 30 graduating seniors.

It has awarded scholarships to more than 200 students, as well as awards of merit to more than 75 community-active high school seniors, thanks in part to generous donations from friends and supporters of the LHAND.

This year’s tournament consisted of 90 golfers and 20 $1,000 sponsors. James Connors — of McGrath Enterprise — was a major sponsor, Salem Five sponsored dinner, and Eastern Bank was the cart sponsor.

LHAND Chief Executive Officer Charles Gaeta said 23 years ago, he and his staff were looking to have an event to raise money to meet one of the most important needs in the community, the cost of higher education. That conversation resulted in the golf tournament, which has assisted an abundance of students from the city.

“I am proud of our staff and others for their financial support and work on our largest fundraising initiative each year,” Gaeta said. “Particular thanks this year to Jason Newhall, Cathy Rowe, Bryanna Garcia and John Ladd. (I also want to thank) the chairperson of LHAND, and owner of John’s Oil, Laurie Walsh and her husband, John, for their generosity for 23 years.”
