School Sports Roundup: Lynn Classical wins Lynn City Volleyball Tournament

The Lynn Classical volleyball team fell behind 18-11 in the first set and faced an uphill battle, but the Rams never gave up and ended up pulling off a 3-0 win over St. Mary’s to win the Lynn City Volleyball Tournament Friday night at Conigliaro Gymnasium. The Rams won by set scores of 26-24, 25-15, 25-19.

“It’s obviously really exciting to win the city tournament, but the girls really showed me something out there (Friday),” said Classical coach Chris LeBlanc. “We were down in every set and we never stopped fighting. St. Mary’s played a great match, but our girls just wouldn’t quit.”

Chloe Clement led the way for Classical, earning tournament MVP honors in the process. Samantha Thoeun and Jauslin Mensah also had huge games in the victory.

Classical (3-0) travels to Revere Monday (5:15).

St. Mary’s (1-1) plays on the road at KIPP Monday (5).

VOLLEYBALL

Lynn City Tournament Consolation Game

at Conigliaro Gymnasium

Lynn Tech 3, Lynn English 2

The Tigers took the consolation game by set scores of 22-25, 25-15, 17-25, 25-16, 15-12.

Derlande Montas had seven kills, three aces and two blocks in the win, while Nadesha Martinez had eight aces and three digs. Lilly Cote added four kills and three aces.

Tech (2-1) plays on the road at Innovation Tuesday (4).

Marblehead 3, Bishop Fenwick 1

The Magicians won by set scores of 25-12, 16-25, 25-20, 25-22. 

Julia Potvin had a massive game with 31 assists, while Nicolette Teti and Lilah Thompson each had 12 kills and three blocks. Caitlin Parkman and Izzy Wabno combined for 19 digs in the victory.

Marblehead (1-0) hosts Peabody Tuesday (5:30).

Jessica Furtado and Lacy Murphy played well in the loss for the Crusaders. 

Fenwick (0-1) hosts Ipswich Monday (5:30).

Woburn 3, Peabody 1

The Tanners fell by set scores of 27-25, 20-25, 26-28, 19-25.

Despite the loss, Abby Bettencourt had a huge game with 25 assists, six kills and three blocks. Isabel Bettencourt added 13 service points, 11 kills and three aces, while Sarah Broughton had eight kills. Allie Flewelling and Lauryn Mendonca each had six kills in the loss.

Peabody (0-2) plays on the road at Marblehead Tuesday (5:30).

Swampscott 3, Revere 2

Swampscott (1-1) travels to Winthrop Tuesday (5:30).

Revere (0-1) hosts Classical Monday (5:15).

BOYS SOCCER

Newburyport 6, Bishop Fenwick 0

Fenwick (0-1-1) is off until Wednesday (3:30), when it will host Arlington Catholic.

GIRLS SOCCER

Peabody 0, Newton North 0

Goalkeeper Emma Bloom was the star of the game for the Tanners, earning the shutout in net. Ally Bettencourt, Maddie Scacchi, Meghan Billingsley and Sam Simmons all played well in the draw.

Peabody (0-0-1) hosts Danvers Sunday afternoon (2).

FIELD HOCKEY

Marblehead 1, Beverly 1

Jane O’Neil scored the lone goal in the draw for the Magicians, while Grace MacLean had one assist. Goalie Haley Baker notched four saves, while Peighton Ridge, Mia Carr, Lillie Salisbury and Tegan Sherwood all played well.

Marblehead (0-0-1) hosts Danvers Monday (4).

Danvers 2, Swampscott 0

Swampscott ( 0-1) travels to Peabody Monday (4).
