SAUGUS ― After the Board of Selectmen meeting on Sept. 7, residents will be able to exercise at a new Planet Fitness located on 325-327 Broadway whenever they want.
The board voted unanimously to approve Planet Fitness’ request to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Attorney Richard Magnan represented the owners of the property as well as the property manager, Finard Properties LLC. The attorney stated that all forms had been filled out, including additional information regarding the tanning beds at the property as requested by the Board of Health.
Magnan did mention an issue of money being owed, but he stated at the meeting that the property owners will pay a small fee.
Selectman Jeff Cicolini inquired about Planet Fitness’ hours of operation, asking if the business model of the gym is to operate 24 hours. Thomas Geraghty, who works for Finard, stated that this specific franchisor requested the business to operate 24 hours.
“It’s really for customers that are unable to get to the gym during the (normal working) hours,” said Geraghty. “So night nurses, that’s the example that’s been provided previously.”
Cicolini said that the gym will be in a plaza that will not have any residential impact, which is why he thought the request was not out of the ordinary. He also noted the amount of money that is being invested in the plaza.
