LYNN ― It was a thrilling day of soccer at Manning Field on Saturday afternoon, as four of Lynn’s five high schools took to the field to decide this year’s Lynn City Soccer Tournament champions. When all was said and done, the Lynn Classical girls topped St. Mary’s 2-1 in penalty kicks and the Lynn Tech boys pushed past Lynn English 2-0 to take home the titles.

Classical goalkeeper Anna Flaherty was named MVP for the girls tournament, while Tech’s Gregoire Amissi was named MVP for the boys tournament.

On the girls’ side, it was a thrilling game from start to finish. After the two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first half, Brooke Moloney broke the deadlock when she scored on an assist from Bella Owumi with just 25 minutes to play.

But the Rams answered right back, as Delaney Dana took a pass from Jayda Mateo and scored the tying goal. While the game officially ended in a tie as far as records are concerned, a penalty kick shootout would decide the winner of the Lynn City Tournament.

The two teams traded goals in the shootout period as well, with Flaherty, Eliza Correnti, and Ava Thurman all scoring for Classical and Owumi, Isabelle Skabeikis, and Sophie Skabeikis all scoring for St. Mary’s.

But then Flaherty made a big save, setting up Molly Mannion to score the title-clinching goal for the Rams.

“It truly felt like a playoff atmosphere out there, and it was such a great high-school soccer game,” said Classical coach Mike Schena. “Just to be a part of this tournament every year is such an honor, but to have a game like that against such a good team is really special.”

Classical (2-0-1) hosts Revere Tuesday night (7:15).

St. Mary’s (1-0-1) hosts Northeast Monday evening (5:30).

For the boys, the game also went into halftime tied at 0-0. But in the second half, Amissi took over and scored both goals for the Tigers to lift them to the title.

Tech (2-0) hosts Northeast Wednesday (3:45).

English (1-1) plays Medford Tuesday (4).
