School Sports Roundup: St. Mary’s golf splits CCL tri-match, earns first win

The St. Mary’s golf team was able to earn its first win of the young season Monday afternoon, splitting a tri-match against Catholic Central League foes St. Joseph’s Prep and Bishop Feehan on the road at Heather Hill Country Club. The Spartans took down St. Joseph’s Prep 155-91, but lost to Feehan by a score of 205-155.

Spartans senior Aidan Emmerich had a great afternoon, shooting 1-under par and putting up a season-high 38 points to lead St. Mary’s. Eric Bridges added 24 points, while Andrew Potter had 23 points, Luke DiLisio had 19 points and Anthony Barror put up 18 points.

“I think the guys are starting to settle in a bit and play a little better,” said St. Mary’s coach Jay Fiste. “The short game is where we still need to make improvements, but that’s generally the last thing that the guys get back in shape early in the year.”

St. Mary’s (1-3) is right back on the course Tuesday afternoon (3) when it hosts Cardinal Spellman at Gannon Municipal Golf Course. 

GOLF

Salem 37, Peabody 35

Salem got wins from Jon Wasserman (5 1/2-3 1/2), Brady Tremblay (6 1/2-2 1/2), Jack Doyle (6 1/2-2 1/2) and Riley Finnerty (5-4).

Salem is now 1-0 on the young season.

BOYS SOCCER

Winthrop 2, East Boston 0

Gustav Hemmingsen continued his strong start to the season on Monday, scoring two goals for the Vikings in the win. Loert Mana added one assist, while goalkeeper Mateo Martinez earned the shutout in net.

Winthrop (2-0) has a quick turnaround with a game against Beverly Tuesday (4).

St. Mary’s 2, Northeast 0

The Spartans were led on offense by Kaya Jackson and Dylan Moroney, who each scored one goal in the win. Goalkeeper Jacob Guarino earned the shutout in net.

St. Mary’s (2-1) travels to Austin Prep Wednesday afternoon (4).

GIRLS SOCCER

St. Mary’s 8, Northeast 1

Sophie Skabeikis led the offensive attack for St. Mary’s with two goals, while Brooke Moloney, Abby Constine, Saribelle Diaz, Kaydee Rouse, Bella Owumi and Chloe Puzzo each scored one goal. 

St. Mary’s (2-0-1) hosts Austin Prep Wednesday night (7:15).

Bishop Fenwick 2, Arlington Catholic 0

The Crusaders got goals from Ally Mitchell and Amy Hatfield in the win, while Ella Morgan notched one assist. Kiera Morgan, Sam Sharp and Molly Jenkins also played well in the victory. Fenwick (1-0) travels to Danvers Thursday evening (6:30).

FIELD HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 7, Everett 0

Maggie Pierce and Lily Pregent continued their torrid starts to the season, each scoring three goals to lead the charge for the Spartans. Yirsy Queliz added one goal in the win, while goalies Adri Bowker and Tabby Lopes combined for the shutout in net. 

St. Mary’s (3-0) has a full week off before facing Georgetown next Monday (3:45).

Bishop Fenwick 1, Bishop Feehan 1

Emily McPhail scored the lone goal for the Crusaders, while Zoe Elwell notched one assist. Goalie Sedona Lawson recorded nine saves, while Emma Perry played a solid all-around game.

Fenwick (2-0-1) has a quick turnaround with a game against Central Catholic Tuesday (4).

Beverly 2, Marblehead 0

Goalie Haley Baker had four saves in the loss for the Magicians, while Jane O’Neil played well.

Marblehead (0-1-1) now has a full week off before facing Masconomet next Monday (4).

VOLLEYBALL

St. Mary’s 3, KIPP 0

The Spartans got solid performances from Ellie Fox and Kiara LoNigro, who both were dominant at the service line in the win.

St. Mary’s (2-1) plays on the road at Malden Catholic Tuesday (5).
