Saugus seeking volunteers for eight town boards

SAUGUS ― Town Manager Scott Crabtree announced Monday that the town is seeking applications for several volunteer positions on eight municipal boards and committees.

These available positions are for the Board of Assessors, Board of Health, Boats and Waterways Commission, Commission on Disability, Conservation Commission, Historical Commission, Planning Board, and Youth and Recreation Commission.

On the Board of Assessors, members are responsible for annually determining market value throughout all real estate in the town. The guidelines for this position are set by the Department of Revenue Bureau of Local Assessment.

If COVID-19 raised awareness, then the Board of Health might be a good match. The BOH is responsible for protecting the public health of residents. Physicians and those with a medical degree are preferred. Some responsibilities are embedded in food sanitation, restaurants, and markets. The BOH is also compliant with the state sanitary and other health codes, as well as emergency preparedness planning.

With such a high volume of fishing, the Boats and Waterways Commission has become quite important to this town. The responsibility of this position is to provide clear, effective and professional policies. These policies will look for the best interest for commercial fishing, public fishing, and recreational boating. It is also important that the waterways remain accessible to all citizens.

The Commission on Disabilities promotes and supports the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of community life. The responsibilities of this position are to answer questions and provide guidance towards disability-related issues that relate to Massachusetts General Laws.

The Conservation Commission is responsible for the preservation of natural resources in town, which includes protection of remaining open spaces, wildlife, salt marshes, and ponds; and restoring streams and the Saugus River to its natural state.

For someone interested in town history, the Historical Commission might be a good fit. This commission’s responsibility is to preserve and register all historical sites in town.

The Planning Board is responsible for hearing, reviewing, and voting on a number of applications proposed to the town. Some of these proposals include subdivisions, special permits for zoning relief, zoning changes, and site plan review permits.

The Youth and Recreation Commission, as its name implies, was established to carry out programs for town youth. These programs are designed to create opportunities for youth and keep them from getting involved with negative activities.

If residents are interested in volunteering, the town asks that they submit a letter of interest and resume by Oct. 15 to either the town manager’s office or send an email to Cmoreschi@saugus-ma.gov.
