Lynn Salvation Army kicks off fundraising campaign

LYNN – The Lynn Corp of the Salvation Army has announced a fundraising campaign for its food pantry and to supplement its operating budget.

This time, the city’s Salvation Army outpost is asking its supporters to fundraise independently, in whatever form they choose.

“We’ve done food festivals; we’ve done yard sales,” said Capt. Helen Johnson, commanding officer and pastor at the Lynn Corp and Community Center. “We were trying to come up with something where people could do anything and everything that they want to do and then donate the money.”

This means that the Salvation Army encourages people to collect, raise, or donate funds in a manner of their own choosing. You can sell something you already own and donate all or part of the proceeds. You can host a virtual party and a 50/50 raffle. Some might choose to collect funds from friends and family or involve their kids in a fundraising activity like a lemonade stand or a car wash.

The organization does not want large events or gatherings to cause the spread of COVID-19 ― but it wants patrons to have fun.

The Salvation Army is hoping to raise $50,000 with this fundraiser to fund its food pantry, help run the building, and supplement any program that doesn’t have a specific funding source.

All funds must be donated by Nov. 1. The Salvation Army will reveal the results during a ceremony on the steps of the City Hall on Nov. 4 that will be live streamed on Facebook.

Johnson asks that supporters make checks payable to the Salvation Army at 1 Franklin St., Lynn, MA 01902.

The Salvation Army is asking anyone who decides to hold a gathering to follow COVID-19 guidelines as prescribed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In addition, starting Oct.5, food pantry hours will be 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Sign-up for Item Santa Christmas Toy Assistance begins on Oct. 5 and will continue through Nov. 19.
