LYNN — Members of the North Shore Labor Council (NSLC) voted this week to endorse Jared Nicholson for mayor and extended its support to 12 other candidates seeking seats on the City Council and School Committee.
For City Council, the NSLC is endorsing incumbents Brian Field, Brian LaPierre, Hong Net and challenger Marven Hyppolite for councilor-at-large; Coco Alinsug for Ward 3; and Richard Colucci for Ward 4.
It also endorsed incumbents Brian Castellanos, Donna Coppola, and Lorraine Gately and challengers Eric Dugan, Tiffany Magnolia, and Lenny Peña for the School Committee.
Nicholson said the endorsement is a very strong addition to his campaign’s grassroots efforts, particularly as it scales up over the next six weeks heading into election day on Nov. 2.
“The North Shore Labor Council’s endorsement means a lot to us on our campaign because of the values we share in supporting working families, in pushing for growth that benefits the city and includes all of us,” Nicholson said. “We’re very grateful and excited for their support.”
The council has decided to prioritize the Lynn mayoral race this fall and will have volunteers knocking on doors over the next six weeks.
Katie Cohen, executive director of the NSLC, said that between federal aid and private development, Lynn is going to experience a once-in-a-lifetime investment.
“In order to support the diverse, working-class communities that make Lynn great, we need workers at the table guiding policy and implementation,” Cohen said. “Jared gets it and has a track record of working with union and community leaders to get things done. When you look at who supports him, from health care to construction workers, you see the broad coalition he has brought together.”
In order to receive an endorsement from the council, candidates had to complete a questionnaire and interview, where they answered questions ranging from preventing privatization and building new schools to racial justice and responsible development.
