School Sports Roundup: Swampscott golf wins a close match against rival Marblehead

The Swampscott and Marblehead golf teams went back-and-forth all afternoon long at Tedesco Country Club Thursday afternoon, and in the end it was the Big Blue who snuck away with a close 36 1/2-35 1/2 win in the rivalry matchup.

Winners for the Big Blue were Will Roddy (5 1/2-3 1/2) and Ben O’Brien (6-3), while Jason Bouffard, Nate Maercklein, Connor Correnti and Quinn Fitzpatrick all tied their matches in the win.

Swampscott (4-3) is right back at it Friday afternoon (4) on the road at Salem at Olde Salem Greens. 

Marblehead got wins from medalist Matt Weed — who shot a 36 and won his match 5-4 — and Jacob Hershfield — who shot a 40 and won his match 6-3. Charlie Grenier, Adrian Baron, Chris Cannuscio and Jack Sontz all tied their matches. 

Marblehead (6-3) also has a quick turnaround with a match Friday (4) against Gloucester at Kelley Greens in Nahant. 

GOLF

St. John’s Prep 228, Malden Catholic 256

Senior Connor Remley shot his lowest score of the season, firing a 36 at Mount Hood Golf Club. Four other Eagles — Nick DeVito (37), Terry Manning (38), Michael Shyjan (38) and Ian Rourke (39) — also broke 40 in the win, while Alex Landry shot a 40.

St. John’s Prep (6-1) is off until Wednesday (3) when it hosts Danvers at Turner Hill Golf Club.

Lynn Classical 36, Somerville 36

In a battle between two of the top teams in the Greater Boston League, the Rams and Highlanders battled to a tie at Patriot Golf Course in Bedford.

Brady Warren had a big day for Classical, shooting a score of 37 to tie his match 4 1/2-4 1/2. Winners on the day for the Rams were Christian Spates (6 1/2-2 1/2), Ethan Chevalier (6 1/2-2 1/2) and Kyle McKenna (8 1/2-1/2) — whose victory helped bring the Rams into a tie for the match.

Classical (6-3-1) takes on Danvers Saturday (3) on the road at Rowley Country Club.

BOYS SOCCER

Lynn Classical 2, Somerville 0

Gabriel Sarmento and Imer Barrios each scored one goal in the win for the Rams, while Elzon Halimi and Omar Girdia each had one assist. Goalkeeper Isaiah Diaz notched the shutout victory in net. 

Classical (4-4-1) hosts Peabody Saturday evening (6).

GIRLS SOCCER

Lynn Classical 3, Somerville 0

The Rams knocked off the only other undefeated team in the Greater Boston League Thursday, putting them in prime position in the race for the GBL title. 

Lauren Wilson and Delaney Dana each scored one goal in the win, while Ava Correnti notched her first varsity goal on a penalty kick. Maggie Nerich and Jayda Mateo each had one assist, while goalkeeper Anna Flaherty notched another shutout in net. The Rams still have not allowed a single goal in GBL play, and they’ve only given up one goal on the entire season.

Classical (8-0-2) returns to the field Tuesday (4) on the road at Chelsea. 

Revere 2, Everett 1

Carolina Bettero scored both goals in the win for the Patriots, bringing her career total to 88.

Revere (5-1-1) plays on the road at Boston International Friday (4).

FIELD HOCKEY

Bishop Fenwick 2, Austin Prep 1

Grace Morey and Zoe Elwell each had one goal and one assist to lead the way for the Crusaders, while Tess Keaney and Karina Gyllenhaal played well in the midfield. Goalie Sedona Lawson made five saves in the victory.

Fenwick (5-1-2) travels to Bishop Stang Saturday afternoon (3).

VOLLEYBALL

Marblehead 3, Masconomet 1

The Magicians pulled off the win by set scores of 25-16, 21-25, 25-17, 26-24. 

Julia Potvin had a big game with 24 assists, while Lilah Thompson added 10 kills in the win. Keira Sweetnam had six kills, while Caitlin Parkman notched 10 digs. 

Marblehead (6-1) plays on the road at Peabody Monday (5:30).

Peabody 3, Danvers 1

The Tanners took home the win behind set scores of 22-25, 25-12, 25-11, 25-17. 

Abby Bettencourt had a big day with 37 assists in the win, while Isabel Bettencourt led the offensive attack with 19 kills. Kristina Cardello had 23 digs and two aces, while Sarah Broughton had 13 kills and Ally Flewelling added six kills. 

Peabody (4-3) hosts Medford Friday (5:30).

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

St. Mary’s at CCL Freshman/Sophomore Meet

The Spartans secured a second-place finish as a team after three runners finished in the top 10 on Thursday.

Kyle Kwiatek led the way with a first-place finish, running a time of 9:17. Matheus Menezes-Avendanha finished sixth (10:13), while Matthew Terrien finished seventh (10:18), Will Potter finished 13th (11:11) and Isaiah Weston finished 18th (11:19).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

St. Mary’s at CCL Freshman/Sophomore Meet

Despite only having one runner finish in the top 10, the Spartans notched a fourth-place finish at the annual freshman/sophomore meet. 

Kelsey Kwiatek was the top finisher for the Spartans in second place, running a time of 11:07. Other strong performances came from Gabby Marichal in 18th place (13:28), Nina Lopes in 23rd place (13:44) and Makayla Kokonezis in 32nd place (15:09).
