Soccer Roundup: KIPP boys soccer clinches first-ever state tournament berth

Tuesday was not just any other victory for the KIPP Panthers boys soccer team as they defeated Minuteman Tech 7-2 to qualify for the state tournament for the first time in school history.

The Panthers had a complete effort as they outshot Minutemen Tech 31-5 in the important conference win. 

Junior captain Kevin Rodriguez kicked off the scoring in the fourth minute after a scuffle inside the box led to him finding the back of the net. Jeff Paz, Henry Romero, Josue DeLeon, James Paz, Kevin Rodriguez, and senior Chidindu Aniekwenagbu also tallied goals in the match that maintained KIPP’s undefeated conference record. 

Aniekwenagbu capped the scoring in the final seconds with a left-footed shot inside the box after receiving a beautiful through ball from Kenny DeLeon. Deleon had two assists on the evening. 

The Panthers head on the road to play Greater Lawrence on Thursday (4). 

BOYS SOCCER

Lynn Classical 1, Chelsea 0

Jason Ventura scored the game-winning goal with only three minutes to play to lift the Rams to victory. The goal came on a set piece, with the assist going to Elzon Halimi.

Classical (5-5-1) hosts Revere Thursday (5:30) at Manning Field.

Lynn Tech 1, Shawsheen 1

Greg Amissi scored the lone goal in the draw for the Tigers. 

Tech (7-1-1) travels to Essex Tech Thursday (6).

Malden 2, Lynn English 0

Lynn English suffered a defeat against Malden losing 2-0. Coach Kerry King said that his side played well but couldn’t come up with the victory.

“We really played well in the midfield today,” he said. “We created a lot of chances and were not able to finish. We were sloppy and made a couple of mistakes defensively and we paid for it today.”

The Bulldogs are now 4-5-1 and face Medford on Thursday.

Revere 0, Somerville 0

The Revere Patriots earned a point with a hard fought 0-0 tie against Somerville.

Revere is now 3-4-2 and faces Charlestown at home on Wednesday.

St. John’s Prep 1, St. John’s (Shrewsbury) 1

The Eagles walked away from the match with one point as their record is now 5-2-2.
St John’s Prep plays Catholic Memorial at home on Thursday (4).

Swampscott 8, Salem 0

Mason Bergeron led the way for the Big Blue with a hat trick and an assist while Valerio Tatafiore scored once and had four assists. 

Ruairi Harrington, Jack Fredrickson, Chris Urbano, and Szymon Wabno also found the back of the net for Swampscott. 

The Big Blue are now 3-3 this season and face Beverly on Thursday. (4)

Danvers 2, Marblehead 0

While center back Schuyler Schmitt left it all out on the pitch, according to Marblehead head coach Elmer Magana, the Magicians allowed two goals on Tuesday night. 

“They took advantage of two counter attacks and did not miss,” said Magana. “We had our chances but didn’t find the back of the net.”

Marblehead fell to 4-4-1 with the loss and heads to Winthrop on Thursday.

Winthrop 3, Peabody 1

Victor Maciel scored the lone goal for the Tanners, who are now 5-4 this season. Coach Stan McKeen said the Tuesday night loss was very frustrating.

Beverly 9, Saugus 0

The Sachems had a rough go of it as they fell to the Panthers on Tuesday night. 

GIRLS SOCCER

Lynn Classical 8, Chelsea 0

Amanda Tucker and Sienna McLean scored the first varsity goals of their career for the Rams in the victory. Lynn Classical also got two goals from Lauren Wilson while Jayda Mateo, Molly Mannion, and Eliza Correnti tallied a goal on the night. 

Goalkeeper Anna Flaherty has yet to allow a goal in conference play. 

The Rams are now 9-0-2 and face Revere on the road Thursday evening (4).

Malden 1, Lynn English 0

Head coach Abby Driscoll said that her squad played good defensively but unfortunately the Bulldogs were unable to get on the scoreboard. 

The Bulldogs will look to get their third win of the season when they take on Medford on Thursday.

Somerville 4, Revere 0

The Lady Patriots suffered a defeat at the hands of Somerville on Tuesday evening. 

Revere’s next matchup is against Lynn Classical on Thursday (4).

Swampscott 3, Salem 0

The Big Blue got goals from senior captain Sophie DiGrande, junior Laine Foutes, and junior Mia Schena.

“I thought we played very well.” said head coach Ken Leeder. “We played hard. I thought Salem played hard too and we are glad to come away with the win today.”

Swampscott is now 5-2-2 and will head on the road to face Beverly on Thursday night. (7)

Beverly 3, Saugus 0

The Sachems only entered the second half down a goal but gave up two more goals in the final 40 minutes. 

Saugus is now 7-5 and goes up against Gloucester on Thursday (4:30).

Peabody 4, Winthrop 0

The Tanners got the victory on senior night courtesy of goals from Sam Rowe, McKayla Fisher, Emily McDonough, Allyson Bettencourt.
