LYNN — The Lynn Firefighters Local 739 union has announced it is endorsing School Committee member Jared Nicholson for the next mayor of Lynn.
The union previously met with Nicholson and his opponent, City Council President Darren Cyr, to get to know the candidates and have extensive conversations on their values, plans, and visions for the city if elected mayor.
At Monday night’s union meeting, members met to reflect on these conversations and vote on a candidate to officially endorse.
The president of the firefighter’s union, Matt Reddy, said they decided to endorse Nicholson because they feel that his vision aligns with that of the department’s.
“We had many conversations with them and we felt that Jared’s plans and goals represented those of the department’s the best,” Reddy said.
Choosing a candidate to endorse is a detailed process that includes questions and meetings, Reddy said.
Some of Nicholson’s values that Reddy said the union agreed with include working with the department on firehouse safety and staffing.
Nicholson said he is honored to receive the union’s endorsement for mayor.
“Our firefighters put their lives on the line every single day, and that was especially true being on the frontlines during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” Nicholson said. “They will be integral to the vision of Lynn’s future that our campaign is building in which public infrastructure funds and private development benefits the whole city, including public-safety upgrades and improvements.”
Nicholson also recently received an endorsement from the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters (NASRCC).
The NASRCC said Nicholson supports responsible development in the city and will fight for fair wages, upholding workplace safety, and creating pathways to good jobs through workforce training and apprenticeship programs.
Nicholson said he is thrilled to have received this endorsement, adding that he and NASRCC share the similar goal of having better jobs for Lynn residents.
“NASRCC is a great addition to the broad coalition that we’re putting together to help us make the most of the opportunity we have for positive growth,” Nicholson said.
The final election is on Tuesday, Nov. 2 and polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. The last day to register to vote for this election is on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 8 p.m.
