SWAMPSCOTT ― It was a fun and spooky Thursday afternoon for the residents of Cherry Street.
The Swampscott Housing Authority and Police Department got together to hold a Halloween celebration where children living on Cherry Street ran around in costumes and participated in games like potato-sack races and bobbing for apples.
There was also plenty of candy.
This was the first time that the event was held in the neighborhood and Irma Chez, who works with the Swampscott Housing Authority, said that it was exciting to see the children having fun.
“These kids don’t have a lot, and living in public housing, they don’t feel like people care that much,” she said. So it’s good to do these types of things with them.”
Police Officer Sal Caruso, who is also the liaison for the housing authority, said that events like Thursday’s are the best part of the job. Residence Service Coordinator Jousette Nohana added that she considers it an honor to be helping out in the community.
“I know that they don’t have the benefits that the rest of us do, so I feel really blessed,” said Nohana. “I live in Marblehead and we have a lot of things that are really easy to us so coming here and doing this for them feels wonderful.”
