NAHANT — This month, the Police Department will break its strict code of clean-shaven officers in order to support kids with cancer.

The Nahant Police Department has begun its fifth consecutive No-Shave November. Officers participate by growing out their facial hair in an effort to raise visibility and awareness for the organization Cops For Kids With Cancer.

“Our goal is $5,000 every year, which goes to a family in need,” said Sgt. Matthew Morneau. “We can put that $5,000 in a family’s pocket that needs it. That’s the goal, obviously; if we can get more that would be better.”

Cops For Kids With Cancer is a federally-recognized charitable organization that helps support and raise awareness for children with cancer.

The Massachusetts-based charity, with locations between Boston and Ireland, includes the Boston Police Department, the FBI, the Massachusetts State Police, An Garda Siochana (national police service of the Republic of Ireland), and other local police departments.

According to Cops For Kids With Cancer, more than $4.1 million has been given to 762 families with children battling cancer.

The town’s police department will be raising money throughout the month of November. T-shirts will be for sale at the police station for $20. Each shirt has the Nahant Police Department logo on the front affixed with a beard, and on the back there is a list of sponsors.

The sponsors are the Nahant Fire Fighters Association, The Oceanview of Nahant, Seaside Pizza Nahant, Catering by Brett Henry, Harbor View Cookies, Tides Restaurant, G/J Carting, The K9 Edge, Seaside Variety, Turnstone Market, and Bay State Silkscreen and Embroidery.

Every dollar from each shirt sold will be donated directly to Cops For Kids With Cancer.

The Police Department is also holding a special; those who buy the first 50 shirts will get a custom, limited-edition No-Shave November cookie. The cookies are professionally made in Nahant by a local family who benefited from this charity back in 2013.
