Nahant Village Church walks for hunger

NAHANT ― The Village Church is partnering with My Brother’s Table through Nov. 14 for a virtual walk for hunger.

Participants can go on virtual walks on their own at the time of their choice, with all proceeds going toward providing food to people in need.

“The Nahant Village Church has had a relationship since the founding of My Brother’s Table in 1982,” said Memorials and Music Committee Chair Nancy Cantelmo. “We have supported them with volunteers, meal preparation and serving, and contributions.”

Based in Lynn, My Brother’s Table provides meals and a wide range of other services to those in need on the North Shore through the support of the communities it serves.

According to My Brother’s Table, 793,850 meals will be served in 2021.

Being the largest soup kitchen in the North Shore, My Brother’s Table has provided over five million hot, free meals and outreach to men, women, and children in need.

My Brother’s Table has been open 365 days a year and serves anyone who walks through their doors.

According to My Brother’s Table, approximately 20 percent of Lynn residents live below the poverty level, which in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is 10 percent. One in five people in Lynn is considered food insecure, meaning that they do not have the resources to guarantee adequate access to proper nutrition, said My Brother’s Table.

Last year, the Nahant Village Church gave over $2,000 from their operating budget and designated donations from their congregation to the organization.

By the end of this year, the church will hopefully contribute the same amount again.

“We are proud to be supporters of the largest soup kitchen on the North Shore, which has continued, despite the pandemic, to offer free meals and outreach to our neighbors in Lynn,” Cantelmo said.

Normally the walk is three miles along the Lynn and Swampscott shoreline, however, due to COVID-19 protocols, the walk is now virtual for the safety of its participants.

Anyone interested in donating should visit My Brother’s Table’s website to donate directly https://www.mybrotherstable.org or contact the Nahant Village Church at 781-581-1202.
