REVERE ― A 21-year-old Lynn man is facing charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, after he hit a state trooper with his car when fleeing the scene of an arrest in Revere.
Two Massachusetts state troopers ― a field training officer and the new trooper he is training ― stopped the man, Juan Pineda, at around 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday on Shirley Avenue in Revere for being a wanted suspect for motor vehicle violations, including failure to stop for police in a past incident when he fled from a trooper.
The two troopers exited their cruiser and approached Pineda’s Audi, ordering him to exit the vehicle.
Pineda refused to exit the vehicle and drove away as the troopers were still on foot outside of his car, striking the field training officer in his leg.
Shots were fired by one or both troopers, but Pineda was not struck and he fled the scene.
Pineda stopped the vehicle a short distance away, on Arlington Street, and ran on foot.
He was captured by Revere Police after a foot pursuit.
Pineda is being booked at the State Police-Revere Barracks on charges related to the incident, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and the outstanding warrant.
Pineda is expected to be held overnight and arraigned in Chelsea District Court on Thursday.
Both troopers are being evaluated at a Boston hospital, where the field training officer is also being treated for a leg injury.
The facts and circumstances of the incident remain under investigation by State Police.
Per state law, District Attorney Rachael Rollins of Suffolk County, which has jurisdiction over the case, will review the findings of the investigation.
