NAHANT — Residents will get a chance to literally shoot for a free turkey on Saturday.
The fifth annual Turkey Shoot will give residents the opportunity to shoot a fake target with a BB gun in order to win a turkey for Thanksgiving.
“This has been one of our most loved events,” said Mark Reenstierna, president of the Nahant Lions Club. “We shoot paper targets with BBs and award turkeys as prizes for the marksman with the highest score in each group of 20 targets.”
Participants will be able to purchase targets at the site. Targets can be paid for with cash or cans. Each target costs $3 or five cans.
The Lions Club will be working with local food pantries for their soup drives this holiday season. The Club will be collecting all of the cans from the Turkey Shoot and encourages residents, even if they don’t participate, to donate. Any leftover turkeys will also be donated.
Proceeds from the Turkey Shoot will also go toward the Club’s charitable focus, the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund, which is based in Belmont.
Residents can donate to this fund by purchasing targets or buying items from a snack shack, which will have warm cider, doughnuts, hot chocolate, and hot dogs.
The turkeys are donated by members of the Lions Club — which has served the town for more than 67 years — and by local businesses, including a very generous donation from the Tides Restaurant & Pub.
“We thank all who donate to this cause,” said Reenstierna. “We couldn’t do this without you.”
The Turkey Shoot is held at the Department of Public Works yard on Flash Road, from 10 a.m to 2 p.m.
