LYNNFIELD — At the start of the 2021 season, Lynnfield High School’s cheerleaders came up with three goals for the team.
The team wanted to win the Cape Ann League (CAL) title, win the Division 4 North Regionals and land among the top two in the state championship. On Sunday, the Pioneers completed their trifecta.
The cheerleading team entered 2021 after a 2020 season that was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Head coach Tiffany Petruzzella said that for her sophomores, this year’s competitions were the first of their high school career with fans in the stands.
“It was rough for them (the cheerleaders),” Petruzzella said. “They feed off of the crowd. They like that encouragement from their fan section cheering them on when they are on the mat and they didn’t have any of that last season so they were really happy to have that this season. They had their parents, they had the football players, and we actually even had the football parents join us along with coach (Pat) Lamusta. That was really nice for them.”
Lynnfield received a raw score of 85.7 with no deductions in the Division 4 state championships that were held at Worcester University Sunday. Prior to that, they recorded an 80.7 in the Division 4 North Regional championship.
“The best thing was seeing them proud of themselves,” Petruzzella said. “They worked so hard all year round and it was nice to see them advance on and do so well all season.”
Petruzzella mentioned that the team had two seniors on the roster. Ava Natola and Gianna Fuccillo were the leaders of the squad this year.
“Both of them worked really well together providing an upbeat atmosphere and staying positive throughout the season,” the head coach said.
