PEABODY — Peabody junior Danny Barrett isn’t a stranger to finding the end zone, but Thursday’s 41-6 win over the Saugus Sachems was a little different.
Barrett and junior quarterback Shea Lynch have developed quite the rapport over this season. The duo even gained the nickname 7-Eleven, with Lynch donning No. 7 and Barrett No. 11. It also seems worth noting that just like the convenience store chain, Barrett always seems to be open.
In 2021, Barrett tallied more than 600 yards receiving as Peabody marched its way to winning an NEC Lynch Division title. Unfortunately for the junior and the Tanners, they failed to make the state tournament. Still, Barrett was glad that he and his teammates were able to help the seniors on the roster end their high school careers on a high note.
“This year I know we kind of got a little screwed with the playoffs and all that but we came out and had a huge winning streak to end the year so it was a good way to send them (the seniors) off,” said the wideout.
With his touchdown catch against Saugus, Barrett broke a Peabody High School record for receiving touchdowns in a season (10). The junior said that he had no expectations of breaking any records coming into the 2021 season.
“(It’s) kind of crazy,” he said. “I didn’t expect to (break the record) coming into the year but it’s here.”
In a display of the type of teammate that Barrett is, he quickly mentioned that he shares the record with his teammate, sophomore Eli Batista, who also had a touchdown catch on Thanksgiving.
After breaking his arm last season, Barrett worked with assistant coach and Peabody High alum Doug Santos to build up his strength, and the wideout credited those workouts for his performance this season.
As Barrett now looks ahead to his senior season, he has one goal in mind. Everything the wideout is hoping for can be encompassed in one word.
“Playoffs.”
