FOXBOROUGH — It’s hard enough to win two games in a row, let alone 20. Which is what makes the Marblehead football team’s accomplishment all the more impressive.
The Magicians now own the longest winning streak in Massachusetts as well as the Division 3 title after coming away with a 35-28 victory over North Attleborough Thursday evening.
With the win, the Division 3 Super Bowl champs won their 20th straight game along with their first-ever state title.
Senior George Percy said the winning streak is a testament to the hard work the team has put in.
“We put in tons of work,” said Percy. “When there was COVID and kids weren’t working, we were working on Zoom calls, we were working in the winter when it was freezing out, we were just putting in that work. I came here two years ago (from St. Mary’s) and I haven’t lost a game. Credit to the coaches, they put in the work and believed in me.”
The message of hard work was echoed by head coach Jim Rudloff.
“This was a job that we started back in the spring (Fall Sports II season), and those guys are just as much a part of this victory and streak as anyone here,” said Rudloff. “These guys are going to be remembered forever.”
The Magicians’ high-powered offense led the way for Marblehead. Senior Joshua Robertson threw for 290 yards and four touchdowns and also added a rushing touchdown to his Super Bowl resume. Junior Connor Cronin was Robertson’s favorite target, as he racked up 10 catches for 263 yards and three touchdowns.
“I think it (the winning streak) reflects mostly on (head) coach (Jim) Rudloff,” said Robertson. “Nobody knows the amount of hours and work that he puts into this (program). Staying up late, uploading film, breaking down film, (and) putting in game plans for us. I mean, he does so much and this win is for him.”
The offense found success as a whole. The Magicians had 346 total yards, gaining 290 through the air. Marblehead’s defense also came to play as senior Liam McIlroy was able to grab an interception along with Cronin who clinched the game with his pick.
“Being a part of all 20 wins is crazy,” said Cronin. “The fact that we have made it 20 in a row shows how strong this program is and how good our coaching is. We look forward to keeping that alive next year.”
