NAHANT ― After the Northern Strand Trail was once again discussed by the Board of Selectmen, the town is looking to make changes to the project in the name of safety.
After a Board of Selectmen meeting on Nov. 17, a public hearing was held regarding the Northern Strand Trail, where the project received support. However, some concerns were raised in regard to traffic impact on the town. The conversation resumed at the board’s Dec. 1 meeting.
“As a town, I thought we made some very good points there and I thought they were received well,” said Town Administrator Antonio Barletta.
The main issue is the location of a new bike lane slated for the northbound side of the “last part of the Lynnway” near the rotary, as stated by Barletta. The town is asking for the bike lane to be moved to the southbound side where, according to Barletta, there is less traffic congestion.
Board of Selectmen Chair Joshua Antrim added that he was pleased that the organizers behind the trail project are willing to adapt.
“I was encouraged by their willingness to amend and consider other options,” he said.
Selectman Gene Canty added that the board needs to “push hard” for these changes.
Barletta also noted that since the public hearing he has been in contact with town administrators in Swampscott as well as in Marblehead.
“I’ll be drafting a letter with the help of (Town Counsel) Attorney (Daniel) Skrip that will formalize our comments that we made in that meeting and hopefully we will get Swampscott and Marblehead to sign on as well,” said Barletta, who added he hopes to get the letter out within the week.
