PEABODY — While the Peabody boys basketball team has lost its leading scorer from last season (Drew Lucas), head coach Thad Broughton isn’t lowering his expectations.
“Our goal is to win the NEC and participate in the new state tournament format,” Broughton said. “Our league is always competitive and we are looking forward to a normal length season. We have a great group of players who do well academically as well as athletically. They will need to commit themselves to our system and I am looking forward to seeing their growth this year.”
The Tanners are bringing back six varsity players from last season, where they finished 8-4 in a COVID-shortened season. Broughton thinks that Peabody’s flexibility when it comes to players being able to play multiple positions will be key, as they are lacking in the height department.
“Our philosophy is to learn and grow each day throughout the season,” said Broughton. “We want our players to be well-rounded and able to adapt to different situations.”
Senior guard Nick Soper and senior forward Colin Berube will be leading the way for the Tanners as captains. Soper is a three-year varsity player who controls the game as point guard.
“We will rely on Nick (Soper) to guide our team and he is a key player at both ends of the court,” said Broughton.
Berube is known more for his shooting and rebounding. Broughton believes that the forward will make a significant impact this year. The head coach is also expecting a big year from senior forward Luke Roan, who is a versatile defender.
The basketball team also features some stars from the fall as juniors Shea Lynch and Danny Barrett will be teaming up again, this time on the hardwood. Lynch — who set multiple records at quarterback for the Tanners this fall — started as a sophomore and can be a tough presence in the paint. Broughton pointed out Barrett — who also broke a football record with 10 touchdown receptions this year — has his shooting and defensive ability as his best assets.
The Tanners were also able to get some production from their freshmen last season as Raphel Laurent and Anthony Forte both made major contributions in their high school debuts. Last season, Peabody played four underclassmen and Broughton doesn’t see that changing in the 2021-22 season.
“They provided us with instant offense last year,” Broughton said of the freshmen. “I am looking forward to seeing their continued improvement.”
Peabody opens up the 2021 season Tuesday, Dec. 14 (7) at home against Masconomet.
