LYNN — Lynn Classical boys basketball coach Marvin Avery wants his team to play a very specific type of basketball.
“High, up-tempo, (and) press,” he said. “We can mix it up. That’s my M.O. Over my years, we are very fast and want to press teams and keep the basketball game up-tempo. We don’t want to slow things down and hopefully create a lot of turnovers off of our press.”
With a far-from-normal 2020 season that was also Avery’s first as head coach of the Rams, the 15-year Lynn Tech coach said it was difficult for the players to adjust to his system.
Avery said that a return to some sense of normalcy will be good for not only his team, but for the entire city.
This year’s Classical team is led by captain Tyler Wilson. Avery described him as a phenomenal athlete who will set the tone for the Rams both on and off the court. Brady Warren and Jadden Gonzalez will look to shoot the lights out from behind the three-point line. Marquese Avery will bring flexibility as he can guard any position on the court.
The head coach stated that Marquese Avery’s flexibility is a big asset for the team.
“To have a guy that can play multiple positions, cover everyone and even handle the ball,” said the head coach. “That’s a good problem that we are going to have at Classical with Marquese doing that on both ends of the court.”
As the 2021-22 season approaches, Avery thinks the Rams can make some noise in the Greater Boston League this season.
“It’s going to take some time,” the head coach said. “The kids are all excited and they really didn’t have too much time to get acclimated to the basketball team last year. They did the right things on and off the court in the summer. The main thing is that we have good student-athletes. The guys do the right thing in the classroom and that’s just a big plus coaching whether you win or lose.”
Lynn Classical opens up the 2021-22 season against Somerville at home on Tuesday (7).
