BOSTON — A former U.S. Postal Service mail carrier who worked in Saugus was sentenced in federal court Friday for stealing mail containing gift cards and cash, the U.S. Attorney’s office said.
Brian Thibodeau, 49, of Danvers, was sentenced to one year of probation and a $7,500 fine. He was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $175.
Thibodeau pleaded guilty to one count of theft of mail by an employee of the U.S. Postal Service on Aug. 5, prosecutors said.
The defendant had worked as a mail carrier in the Saugus post office since 2001. In 2020, he stole cash and gift cards sent in mail he was delivering to postal customers. Thibodeau stole approximately $2,000 worth of gift cards from the customers on his route and spent the funds for his personal use, prosecutors said.
