School Sports Roundup: Winthrop boys basketball opens up with a win

The Winthrop boys basketball team got its season off to a stellar start Tuesday afternoon, rolling to a 71-38 victory over Salem Academy at Chris Tsiotos Court. 

The Vikings were led by a 20-point effort from sophomore George Galuris, while junior Zach Bogusz was right behind with 19 points. Senior captain Chris Cappuccio added 15 points and senior captain Luca Zanelli had nine.

Winthrop (1-0) is now off until Monday (7) when it plays on the road at Saugus.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Essex Tech 51, Lynn Tech 38

The Tigers were led by Michael Welch, who had 12 points and six steals in the loss.

Tech (0-1) travels to Mystic Valley Friday (5:30).

Hamilton-Wenham 66, Lynnfield 48

The Pioneers got 11 points from sophomore Chris Daniels in the loss, while junior Steven Dreher added 10 points and freshman Gavin Deluties added nine points.

Lynnfield (0-1) hosts Newburyport in its home opener Friday (6:45).

St. Mary’s 77, Arlington Catholic 67

Henri Miraka, who spent nearly all of last season injured, had his best game in more than a year Tuesday night, notching 15 points to help the Spartans take home the win at Tony Conigliaro Gymnasium. Omri Merryman also scored 15 points in the win. 

St. Mary’s (2-0) plays on the road at First Baptist Academy Saturday afternoon (2).

Lowell Catholic 64, KIPP 59

Piero Canales had a massive game for the Panthers with 31 points and eight rebounds, while Hakim Badmus put up a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. 

KIPP (0-2) hosts Greater Lawrence Friday (6:30)

Masconomet 53, Peabody 32

The Tanners were led by Anthony Forte’s 10 points, while Danny Barrett had five points and Shea Lynch had four points.

Peabody ( 0-1) plays on the road at Beverly Friday (7).

St. John’s Prep 57, Lawrence 53

The Eagles got a great performance from Mike O’Brien, who put up 20 points, six rebounds and four blocks in the win. Kyle Webster added a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds to go along with three steals and two blocks.

St. John’s Prep (1-0 OR 0-1) has a full week off before taking on Lowell next Tuesday (6:30).

Lynn English 81, Chelsea 57

Tyrese Melo Garcia led the way for the Bulldogs with 26 points in the season-opening win. Jesse Maggs and Carmelo Buese each added 10 points.

English (1-0) hosts Malden Thursday (7).

Marblehead 62, Gloucester 58

The Magicians rallied all the way back from a second-half deficit to pull out the come-from-behind victory in the season opener on the road. 

Tyrone Countrymon led the way for Marblehead with 17 points.

Marblehead (1-0) travels to Masconomet Monday (7).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Winthrop 75, Salem Academy 31

Maddie Stiglets led the way with 18 points for the Vikings, while Reese Brodin had 12 points and Grace Fleuriel had 10 points.

Winthrop (1-0) plays on the road at Salem Friday (7).

Lynn Tech 32, Notre Dame Academy 14

Dayana Hios-Edwards filled the stat sheet for the Tigers with 12 points, six rebounds, seven steals, three blocks and four assists. Nyari Lane-Benjamin added six points, seven steals and five rebounds, while Jayleen Novas had five points, four rebounds and two blocks. Amie Diaz had five points and five steals. 

Tech (1-0) hosts KIPP Friday (5:30).

St. Mary’s 78, Arlington Catholic 22

The three-headed offensive attack from Kellyn Preira (18 points), Yirsy Queliz (17 points) and Niya Morgen (16 points) propelled the Spartans to their second win of the season.

St. Mary’s (2-0) plays on the road at First Baptist Academy Saturday afternoon (12).

Lynn English 85, Chelsea 11

Makenzie Acevedo had a rare form of a double-double in the win for the Bulldogs, notching 19 points and 10 steals to go along with six rebounds. Amara Flores added 12 points and six steals, while Matty Laurino chipped in 11 points and eight steals. 

English (1-0) travels to Malden Thursday (7).

Lynn Classical 58, Somerville 11

While Ava Thurman led the Rams with 13 points, the real story of the night was the fact that all 12 Classical players who checked into the game registered points in the victory. 

Classical (1-0) plays on the road at Chelsea Thursday (7).

Revere 62, Everett 37

Carolina Bettero, fresh off of an incredible soccer season, led the way with 26 points, seven rebounds and four steals for the Patriots. Belma Velic added a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Haley Belloise had 14 points, three rebounds and three steals. 

Revere (1-0) hosts Somerville Thursday (6).

Central Catholic 51, Bishop Fenwick 50

Senior captain Olivia Found notched 21 points and five steals in the loss for the Crusaders, while sophomore Cecilia Kay had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Fenwick (0-1) hosts Cathedral Friday evening (6:30).

Marblehead 41, Gloucester 22

Marblehead (1-0) hosts Masconomet Monday (7).

SWIMMING

Revere 89, Lynn Classical 75

Despite the loss, the Rams got wins from Aleana Benedetto in the 200, Daniel Puma in the 50 and the 100 and Sydney Porter in diving. The 200 freestyle relay team of Puma, Benedetto, Yassine Bakhouch and Merdi Ifufa also earned a win in the pool Tuesday.

Classical (0-1) swims against Medford Thursday (4).
