NAHANT — The town will start the new year with a court appearance in regards to preserving East Point.
At a Board of Selectmen meeting on Wednesday, Selectman Josh Antrim said that there is a “court event” on Jan. 19 regarding the East Point location.
During the meeting, Northeastern University submitted a revised plan to comply with local laws, specifically the Local Wetlands Bylaw.
The discussion around the court event was brought on due to a question from Selectman Mark Cullinan. Cullinan was hoping to bring in the town’s attorneys in order to give the town an update on the various lawsuits revolving around the location.
“It can get kind of confusing and complicated, so rather than me trying to muddle my way through it, I think at some point, Tony, we can get our attorneys together at one of these meetings to walk us through where we are at,” Cullinan said to Town Administrator Antonio Barletta.
Antrim agreed, saying that the court date lining up with a Board of Selectmen meeting provides a perfect opportunity to give an update to the town.
The university is hopeful that in the court of law, the decision will go its way.
“At this point, we fully expect the disagreement in Nahant to be settled in a court of law, not the court of public opinion,” said Renata Nyul, a Northeastern University spokeswoman, in a September statement. “We’ve spent the past three years working with the community, modifying our plans, and offering significant financial benefits to the town. Those steps were unsuccessful, so now we’re eager to move to the legal phase.”
