Santa has his work cut out for him

Alena Kuzub

December 16, 2021 by Alena Kuzub

Doesn’t Santa have the best job on the planet? Traveling the world, bestowing joy and memories on children and adults alike, and eating cookies all holiday season long.

That is probably why he is so cheerful all the time — everybody loves him for his kindness.

If Santa’s example teaches us anything, it is that kindness and giving make both the receiver and giver happier. It might even become the new form of self-care, which is very much on trend this year.

Today we are featuring a letter from a mother of three who is also a grandmother to a 1-year-old little girl. This mother is one of those people who takes care of everyone — trying to provide for her children as well as making sure her grandbaby gets something for Christmas, too.

Unfortunately, due to her small income, and the hard times her family has endured this year, this woman is not able to buy presents for everyone in her family, especially the young ones.

“I recently lost my mother, and had to give all I had. Now, it is harder times,” she wrote. “I am doing my best to pay bills.”

She is taking care of her disabled brother and her grandchild, who had to have a surgery this year, too.

Thus, this writer is asking Item Santa for anything that can make their lives a little better, more cozy and brighter. She hopes that her granddaughter will receive some learning toys and stuffed animals, in addition to clothing and necessities such as diapers and wipes.

Her older kids would appreciate pajamas, slippers, hats and gloves, crafting materials and perfumes.

“Anything would be greatly appreciated to put smiles on their faces on Christmas morning.”

Now in its 55th year, the Item Santa fund helps to make Christmas brighter for the needy. To donate, clip the coupon in The Item and mail it, along with your check, to The Item Salvation Army Santa, 85 Exchange St., Lynn, MA 01901.

There is also a way to donate online through the Salvation Army at itemsanta.org.

All donations are listed in Item print editions through the month of December and into 2022, along with a brief message from each donor, if desired.

NOTE: The application period for aid from Item Santa has closed and The Item does not process applicants. All questions about the program and distribution of gifts should be directed to the Salvation Army at 781-598-0673.
