School Sports Roundup: Kellyn Preira leads St. Mary’s girls basketball to big win

Behind a massive effort from junior Kellyn Preira, the St. Mary’s girls basketball team remained undefeated on the season with a 66-40 win over Austin Prep in a Catholic Central League battle on the road Thursday night.

Preira was the star of the night for the Spartans, putting up an incredible double-double with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Through the first three games of the year, Preira is averaging more than 20 points per game. 

St. Mary’s (3-0) takes on First Baptist Academy Saturday (12).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lynn English 71, Malden 30

The Bulldogs got a pair of big performances in the victory, with Jari Perez notching 25 points to lead the way and Makenzie Acevado following close behind with 18 points.

English (2-0) returns to the court Tuesday (6) on the road at Medford. 

Revere 56, Somerville 20

The Patriots got another big performance from Carolina Bettero (14 points, four rebounds, three steals), while Skyla DeSimone (five points, seven steals, three assists) and Bella Stama (four points, three steals, two rebounds, two blocks) also played well in the win.

Revere (2-0) travels to Lynn Classical Tuesday (7).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Chelsea 52, Lynn Classical 51

The Rams went back and forth with their Greater Boston League foe on the road, but Classical couldn’t pull out the win in the end.

Jayven Soto led the way for the Rams with 18 points, while Tyler Wilson added 15 points in the loss. 

Classical (1-1) travels to Revere Tuesday (7).

Revere 46, Somerville 37

Vincent Nichols led the way for the Patriots with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Jack D’Ambrosio had nine points and eight rebounds. Sal DeAngelis added eight points and four assists.

Revere (1-1) hosts Lynn Classical Tuesday (7).

GIRLS HOCKEY

Gloucester 3, Marblehead 1

The lone goal for the Magicians was scored by Elsa Wood, while Hadley Wales and Ashley Piersol each had one assist. 

Marblehead (1-2-0) plays on the road at Beverly/Danvers Saturday (3:20).

BOYS INDOOR TRACK

Peabody 50, Swampscott 36
Salem 47, Saugus 24
Swampscott 79, Saugus 2
Swampscott 69, Salem 17

Winners for Peabody were Branden Smith in the shot put (47 feet, 5 inches), Benjamin Mckeiman in the 50-yard hurdles (9.5 seconds), Daviel Canela in the 50-yard dash (6.6), Logan Tracia in the one-mile (5:24.3) and Gabe Gitonga in the two-mile (11:30.2). 

Peabody (1-0) runs in a tri-meet against Winthrop and Masconomet Tuesday (4:30).

Swampscott got wins from Vincenzo Videtta in the high jump (5-8), Cole Hamernick in the 300-meter (39.7), Dylan Brawley in the 600 (1:34.5) and Leland Howe in the 1000 (2:59.0). 

Swampscott (2-1) takes on Beverly Tuesday (4).

Top performers for Saugus were Kaeleb Mathieu in the 50 dash (7.4), Yousef Tuffaha in the 300 (46.7), Jason Ciampa in the 600 (1:57.1) and Chas Bono in the one-mile (6:04.2).

Top performers for Salem were Fernandez Eros in the high jump (5-4), Solano Osman in the 50 hurdles (9.9), Michael Ready in the 50 dash (7.04), Robert Palacios in the 300 (42.9) and Nick Balesta in the 600 (1:40.7).

Salem (1-1) and Saugus (0-3) will run in a tri-meet against Marblehead Tuesday night (7).

Marblehead 44, Danvers 42
Danvers 76, Winthrop 6
Marblehead 76, Winthrop 10

Winners for Marblehead were Schuyler Schmitt in the high jump (5-6), Dylan Rose in the 50 dash (7.0), Isaac Gross in the 1000 (2:59.4) and Ryan Thompson in the two-mile (10:37.4). 

Marblehead (2-0) runs in a tri-meet against Salem and Saugus Tuesday (7).

Top performers for Winthrop were Juan Sanchez in the shot put (33-8 3/4), Ryan Cash in the 50 hurdles (10.8) and Evan Rockefeller in the 50 dash (7.2).

Winthrop (0-2) runs in a tri-meet against Masconomet and Peabody Tuesday (4:30).

GIRLS INDOOR TRACK

Peabody was led by double-winner Lindsey Wilson, who won the high jump (5-0) and the 50 hurdles (10.5). Other winners for the Tanners were Trinity Cabrera in the shot put (29-2), Savannah Vargas in the 50 dash (7.3), Yosmery Batista in the 300 (47.9), McKayla Fisher in the 600 (2:11.2), Samantha Simmons in the 1000 (3:30.1), Sarah DiVasta in the one-mile (6:59.1) and Leah O’Neill in the two-mile (13:43.2).

Peabody (1-0) runs in a tri-meet against Winthrop and Masconomet Tuesday (4:30).

Top performers for Swampscott were Lillian Gosselin in the high jump (4-6), Sofia Alvarado in the shot put (27-7 1/2), Elise Hamernick in the 300 (50.1) and Olivia King in the 1000 (3:34.4).

Swampscott (2-1) takes on Beverly Tuesday (4).

Top performers for Saugus were Angelina Lopez in the 50 dash (8.4), Sarah Peacock in the 300 (51.1) and Maria Limbanovnos in the 1000 (4:24.8).

Top performers for Salem were Mei-Li Hannig (25-1), Kate Heppner in the 50 hurdles (12.7), Isabella Cunha in the 300 (50.4) and Charlotte Ross in the two-mile (14:44.0).

Salem (1-1) and Saugus (0-3) will run in a tri-meet against Marblehead Tuesday night (7).

Winners for Marblehead were Keira Sweetnam in the high jump (4-8), Devin Whalen in the 50 hurdles (9.0), Ctae Trautman in the 50 dash (7.7) and Lydia Bailey in the 600 (1:56.6).

Marblehead (2-0) runs in a tri-meet against Salem and Saugus Tuesday (7).

Top performers for Winthrop were Tatayanna Lewis in the shot put (24-7 3/4), Ally Ford in the 50 hurdles (9.8) and Sophia Munson in the 50 dash (8.1).

Winthrop (0-2) runs in a tri-meet against Masconomet and Peabody Tuesday (4:30).

SWIMMING

St. Mary’s 92, Arlington Catholic 62

St. Mary’s (1-0) won’t swim again until the new year, when the Spartans will get in the pool against Bishop Fenwick Jan. 9 (12).

Medford 84, Lynn Classical 78

The Rams got wins from Daniel Puma in the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, Sydney Finnigan in the 500 freestyle, Ava Anderson in diving and the medley relay team of Puma, Finnigan, Yassine Bakhouch and Camille Mendonca.

Classical (0-2) swims against Malden Monday (5).
