School Sports Roundup: Lynn Classical girls basketball stays unbeaten

The Lynn Classical girls basketball team kept its perfect record alive Tuesday night, notching a 52-23 win over Greater Boston League foe Revere at home. 

Ava Thurman led the way on offense for the Rams with 13 points, while Lauren Hennessey scored 12 points and Reese Brinkler added eight.

Classical (3-0) is back in action Tuesday (noon) for the opening round of the Walter Boverini Tournament against Lynn Tech.

For Revere, Skyla DeSimone led the way with 12 points in the loss. Carolina Bettero added seven points, five rebounds and two blocks.

Revere (2-1) travels to North Reading Monday (6).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lynn English 63, Medford 33

The Bulldogs had three players in double figures on the night, with Makenzie Acevado (15 points, five rebounds, eight steals) and Matty Laurino (15 points, four rebounds) leading the way. Jaeleigh Perry added 12 points and six rebounds, while Rosie Chheang had seven points, eight assists and 11 steals. Alisha Jean contributed five points and 11 rebounds.

English (3-0) is back in action Tuesday (3:45) for the opening round of the Walter Boverini Tournament against St. Mary’s.

St. Mary’s 79, Seacrest Country Day 31

The Spartans wrapped up their trip to southwest Florida with a big win Tuesday evening. 

Yirsy Queliz led all scorers with 21 points — all of them coming in the first half. Niya Morgen (13 points), Julianna Conte (10 points) and Bella Owumi (seven points) also played well in the win. 

St. Mary’s (5-1) is back in action Tuesday (3:45) for the opening round of the Walter Boverini Tournament against Lynn English.

Whittier 46, Lynn Tech 38

Despite the loss, the Tigers got a stellar performance from Dayana Hios-Edwards, who scored 18 points. Nyari Lane-Benjamin added six points and four rebounds, while Jayleen Novas had six points and three rebounds.

Tech (2-1) travels to Salem Thursday evening (6).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bishop Fenwick 74, Austin Prep 62

It was a massive night for senior guard Jason Romans, who dominated the game with 24 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and eight steals in the win. Mike Yentin added 21 points and eight rebounds, while Che Hanks scored 20 points. 

Fenwick (2-0) takes on Salem Academy Tuesday (12:30).

Salem 62, Danvers 35

Angel Tejada led the way for the Witches with 21 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Darlin Santiago added 11 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Salem (4-0) returns to action Jan. 4 (7) against Gloucester.

SWIMMING

Somerville 86, Lynn Classical 81

The Rams got two wins from Sydney Finnigan, who took first in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. Daniel Puma took first place in the 50 freestyle, while Camille Mendonca took first in the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. The 200 freestyle relay team of Puma, Aleanna Benedetto, Yassine Bakhouch and Merdi Ifufa also took first place.

Classical (0-3) swims against Lynn English on Jan. 4 (4).

WRESTLING

St. John’s Prep 52, Shawsheen 21

The Eagles picked up wins from Brendan Goes (106 pounds), Alex Schaeublin (113), Tyler Knox (126), Ryan DeSouza (145), Rawson Iwanicki (152), Ethan Barnes-Felix (160), Matt Mitchell (170), Zach Richardson (182), Jack Blizard (220) and Charlie Smith (285). 

St. John’s Prep (8-0) will compete in the Marshfield Tournament Thursday afternoon (4:30).

BOYS INDOOR TRACK

Peabody 53, Masconomet 33

The Tanners had a double-winner in Daviel Canela, who took first place in the high jump (5-10) and the 45-yard dash (5.3 seconds). Other winners for Peabody were Branden Smith in the shot put (47-3) and Michael Perez in the 300-meter (41.0).

GIRLS INDOOR TRACK

Peabody 58, Masconomet 28

The Tanners got wins from Brianna Ewanshia in the high jump (5-0), Trinity Cabrera in the shot put (32-4 3/4), Savannah Vargas in the 45 dash (6.0), Yosmery Batista in the 300 (48.4), Kyra Buckley in the 1000 (3:31.3), Leah O’Neill in the one-mile (6:19.2) and Sarah DiVasta in the two-mile (13:15.1).
