Single mother balances work and school

Pursuing a higher education is a challenge in and of itself.

Classes can be difficult, and time management is crucial to do your best. There is also the great cost that comes with trying to get your degree. Student debt is at an all-time high, and some individuals are forced to pay for school with no help from parents or loved ones.

When you tack on holding down a job, it can seem impossible to balance going to school at the same time. The time crunch only increases, making life quite difficult.

Now try to imagine being a single mother doing all of that? That is the situation that this mother who wrote to Item Santa is in.

“I am a single mother working and going to school full time,” she said. “While I would like to be able to give my children lots of gifts this isn’t always possible. Often I have to choose paying bills.”

Being a single mother is a full-time job. It’s something you do 24/7 for your entire life. You care for your children and are always trying to help them out, no matter what stage of life they are in.

That’s exactly what this mom is doing. She is pursuing a higher education while working to try and give her children the best life possible. All this mother is asking for is just a little bit of help. With all that she is doing for her children, she deserves some help from Item Santa this year.

She isn’t asking for billions of dollars or lavish gifts for her children. She just wants to give them the Christmas they deserve.

“This year I was hoping for help making their Christmas nice,” she said.

Now in its 55th year, the Item Santa fund helps to make Christmas brighter for the needy. To donate, clip the coupon in The Item and mail it, along with your check, to The Item Salvation Army Santa, 85 Exchange St., Lynn, MA 01901.

There is also a way to donate online through the Salvation Army at itemsanta.org.

All donations are listed in Item print editions through the month of December and into 2022, along with a brief message from each donor, if desired.

NOTE: The application period for aid from Item Santa has closed and The Item does not process applicants. All questions about the program and distribution of gifts should be directed to the Salvation Army at 781-598-0673.
