School Sports Roundup: St. Mary’s girls hockey takes down Arlington Catholic

The St. Mary’s girls hockey team got back to its winning ways Wednesday evening, knocking off Catholic Central League foe Arlington Catholic by a score of 4-1 at Connery Rink. 

The Spartans had four different goal scorers in the win, with Gabbi Oakes, Amanda Forziati, Abbie Pool and Gianna Young all finding the back of the net. 

St. Mary’s (3-1-0) hosts Matignon Wednesday (3).

BOYS HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 2, Bishop Fenwick 1

The Spartans remained undefeated on the young season after notching a rivalry win at Connery Rink.

Jake Demarais and Seamus Foley — both of Nahant — each scored a goal for the Spartans.

St. Mary’s (3-0-1) will take on Austin Prep Monday evening (5) in the Christie Serino Christmas Tournament.

For Fenwick, Manny Alvarez-Segee scored the lone goal.

Fenwick (0-2-0) takes on Bishop Feehan Tuesday (2) in the Catholic Memorial Christmas Tournament.

Lynnfield 5, Winthrop 3

Senior captain Chase Carney led the offensive charge with two goals and two assists, while Will Steadman was close behind with two goals. Drew Damiani played more than 30 minutes and recorded two assists in the win, while goalie Phinneas Mitchener made several key saves down the stretch to help seal the win.

Lynnfield (4-0-0) returns to action Sunday morning (10) against Medford in the Castle Island Tournament.

Winthrop (0-2-0) now has more than a week off before returning to the ice Dec. 31 (11) against Medford.

Saugus 3, Pentucket 1

The Sachems were battling back and forth for much of the game, but two goals in the third period helped lift Saugus to a victory.

Massey Ventre scored two goals for the Sachems in the win, while Jason Monahan scored one goal. 

Saugus (2-0-0) will take on Winnacunnet Monday night (7) in the Hillies Christmas Tournament.

Somerville 7, Lynn 1

The lone goal for the Jets in the loss was scored by Devin Copithorne. 

Lynn (1-2-0) hosts Swampscott Tuesday evening (6) in the Lynn Christmas Tournament.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Pentucket 55, Lynnfield 39

The Pioneers hung with the Sachems for three quarters before falling behind in the fourth. 

Gavin Deluties led the way for Lynnfield with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Alex Fleming had 10 points and Zach Pincus had eight points.

Lynnfield (0-3) plays on the road at Wilmington Tuesday afternoon (2:30).

Marblehead 60, Swampscott 48

Marblehead doesn’t play again until Jan. 4 (7) on the road at Winthrop.

Swampscott (1-1) returns to the court Wednesday (7) against Georgetown. 

Gloucester 66, Winthrop 43

Winthrop (1-2) hosts Pioneer Charter II in the Winthrop Christmas Tournament Tuesday afternoon (2).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Peabody 61, Saugus 39

Abby Bettencourt had a big game for the Tanners with 18 points, four blocks and three assists, while Logan Lomasney had a huge double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds to go along with three assists. Taylor Bettencourt had eight points and four assists in the win.

Peabody (4-0) travels to Billerica Wednesday (7).

Ella Castle led the way for the Sachems with 11 points, while Ashleen Escobar was close behind with eight points. Ashley Aldred played a solid defensive game, while Devany Millerick played well off the bench.

Saugus (1-3) hosts Medford Tuesday (12:30).

Pentucket 56, Lynnfield 35

Maggie Ozanian led the way for the Pioneers with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Isabella George and Erika Pasquale each scored six points. Lucy Cleary added four points and 10 rebounds, while Abby Adamo (four points, three rebounds) and Taylor Valiton (three points) also played well in the loss.

Lynnfield (0-3) is off until Jan. 4 (6) when the Pioneers take on Collegiate Charter of Lowell.

Winthrop 58, Gloucester 32

Maddie Stiglets once again led the offensive attack for the Vikings, scoring 14 points. Grace Fleuriel added 10 points in the win, while Haylie Forsyth and Kaylee Farrell played well defensively.

Winthrop (3-1) hosts Stoneham next Thursday (4:30).

Swampscott 22, Marblehead 17

Swampscott (4-0) travels to Manchester-Essex Tuesday (7).

Marblehead travels to Georgetown next Thursday (4).
