LYNN — Mayor-elect Jared Nicholson will be sworn in as the city’s 59th mayor on Monday, Jan. 3.

The inauguration will take place at 7 p.m. in the City Hall auditorium. Additionally, members of the City Council and School Committee will be sworn in that evening before Nicholson.

Members from Nicholson’s team, along with City and public schools staff are on the inauguration committee. Ward 7 Councilor Jay Walsh has contacted the team to help plan the event.

Nicholson will succeed Mayor Thomas M. McGee, who opted not to run for a second term this year.

Nicholson said that he is excited for inauguration day and he hopes to work with the City Council and School Committee.

“We’ve been working hard to plan an inaugural ceremony that will launch our administration. I know my colleagues on the City Council and School Committee are eager to get to work, and I look forward to a memorable evening getting sworn in with them,” he said.

Before running for mayor, Nicholson served on the School Committee, starting in 2015. In March, Nicholson announced his candidacy for mayor and ran against City Council President and Ward 3 Councilor Darren Cyr.

During the campaign, Cyr had a fundraising edge over Nicholson. According to the Office of Campaign and Political Finance, Cyr raised $199,887 while Nicholson raised $146,969.

Nicholson, however, was endorsed by several prominent political figures from Lynn, including state Sen. Brendan Crighton (D-Lynn) and U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA).

Nicholson ultimately was victorious against Cyr, receiving 63.48 percent of the votes (7,962) to Cyr’s 36.13 percent (4,532).

Cyr, who will not return to City Council, will be succeeded by Constantino “Coco” Alinsug. Newcomers to the School Committee include Eric C. Dugan, Dr. Tiffany Magnolia and Lennin “Lenny” Pena.

The three new committee members will be the successors to retiring members John Ford, Mayor-elect Nicholson and Michael Satterwhite, who also ran for mayor during the preliminary election in September.
