The St. Mary’s boys hockey team went on the road and picked up a crucial point Sunday afternoon, making the trip over to Thayer Academy and coming home with a 2-2 draw against BC High.
“To come away with a point against a team like that took a great team effort from our guys,” said St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee. “We had a few guys down and some younger guys had to step up, which is always great to see.”
Brady Bullock and Cam McGonagle — who scored his first career varsity goal — each scored a goal on the day for St. Mary’s. Goalie Owen Giangrande put up a big effort in net, notching 21 saves.
The Spartans took an early lead behind a first-period goal from Bullock, but back-to-back goals from BC High in the second period put St. Mary’s behind.
But in the third period, McGonagle got the puck on his stick and scored a shorthanded goal to tie things up and send it to overtime — where neither side could get the winning goal.
St. Mary’s (3-2-2) hosts Arlington Catholic Wednesday night (8) at Connery Rink.
“This is a big week coming up for us because we have two league games,” said Lee. “It will be nice to get a few days to work on things before we get back to it on Wednesday.”
