SALEM — One person died after a car struck two pedestrians on Highland Avenue on Thursday evening.
The fatal crash occurred at an intersection in front of 450 Highland Ave. at approximately 7:13 p.m., according to the Massachusetts State Police. A 2021 Honda Accord was driving southbound in the left lane when two pedestrians were running across the roadway in front of a Walmart.
The car struck the pedestrians. Salem Police officers found a 41-year-old woman unresponsive in the roadway upon arrival, according to the Salem Police Department. They immediately began lifesaving measures, including CPR.
Atlantic Ambulance and the Salem Fire Department then took over the care. The woman was taken to Salem Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at approximately 7:58 p.m.
The occupants of the Honda were not injured. The driver stayed on scene and called 911.
The Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section is assisting Salem Police with the investigation to determine if criminal charges are warranted.
