HAVERHILL — The Winthrop girls hockey team kept its undefeated record intact over the weekend, going on the road and picking up a 5-2 win over Masconomet in a Northeastern Hockey League matchup at Haverhill Valley Forum Saturday.
“It was a hard-fought win, that’s for sure,” said Winthrop coach Anthony Martucci. “Haverhill has always been kind of a house of horrors for us for some reason, so it was nice to see us go down there and put together a solid effort.”
Mia Martucci, Julia Holmes, Talia Martucci and Kendall Brant each had one goal and one assist to lead the offensive attack, while Adrianna Rizzotto also scored one goal. Lily Tallent, Mia Norris and Emma Holmes each had one assist.
It was also a banner day for Winthrop senior goalie Summer Tallent, who became the program’s all-time leader in career wins by notching the 45th of her storied career with the Vikings. Summer Tallent had nine saves in the win.
“The thing about Summer is that she’s that rare three-sport athlete who just has so much talent and gives the girls in front of her a ton of confidence,” said Anthony Martucci. “It’s been an incredible ride for these past five years, and we’re hoping to send her off on the highest note.”
The two teams went into the second period tied at 2-2, despite Winthrop controlling the play for much of the game. But, as has been the case all season for the Vikings, they couldn’t capitalize on their many scoring chances. On the other side, Masconomet had made the most of its chances to score.
But things changed in the final period. Winthrop exploded for three unanswered goals to break the game open, eventually skating away with the victory.
Winthrop (4-0-1) is off until Saturday afternoon (1:30) when the Vikings host Gloucester at Larsen Rink.
“Every team in our league is good, and it’s a tough test every night,” said Anthony Martucci. “We still need to work on putting the puck in the net and giving Summer some run support, because she’s playing well enough to keep us in all of these games.”
