Saugus Walmart unveils online-grocery pickup

SAUGUS — The Walmart Supercenter on Broadway will provide online ordering of groceries for curbside pickup at the store.

The Planning Board has reviewed Walmart’s application to make adjustments to its building at 770 Broadway to accommodate a new service — online-ordering grocery pickup — which will require store employees to bring customers’ orders to their car, said Attorney Philip Macchi, who represented the retailer at last Thursday’s meeting.

The pickup site will be located on the right side of the building, when looking from Broadway, where there is currently a fire exit with a staircase, said Macchi.

“The proposal is to reconfigure that stairwell into a delivery point so that customers’ groceries can be staged and brought to their cars,” Macchi said.

The store will make some adjustments to the parking lot for this project as well. The pickup location will have dedicated parking spots with respective signage. A few employee parking spots will be moved to the back of the store.

The fire exit will be reconfigured to maintain fire-code compliance.

“This is a minor modification, as you will see for this type of project,” said Saugus Director of Planning and Economic Development Christopher Reilly, addressing the board. “I think it helps the operations of Walmart, which is a good corporate residence of the town. There is not any impact either on site or off site.”

The Planning Board has agreed that the changes would be minor and do not require a public hearing and approved the request as proposed.
