LYNN — As the city goes into its third week with a new administration, it is searching for people to fill roles on several boards and commissions.
Mayor Jared Nicholson is seeking volunteer applicants to serve on the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA), the Conservation Commission, and the Citizens Advisory Board.
Members of the ZBA will approve or deny variances for properties in the city requesting to be excused from the normal zoning requirements.
“This board plays an important role in approaching development in the city in an informed and equitable way,” Nicholson said.
The ZBA meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m., so applicants should be able to commit to this time schedule.
For this role, Nicholson is seeking applicants with knowledge and/or background related to zoning, land use, community development, and building development. Architects, community development nonprofit coordinators, civil engineers, and attorneys specializing in land use or development are encouraged to apply.
On the Conservation Commission, members are tasked with protecting the wildlife, water resources, and natural environment in and around the city.
“This board is key to our goal of safeguarding the green spaces of Lynn and preserving our natural habitats for generations to come,” Nicholson said.
This board is scheduled to meet on the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m., so applicants should be able to commit to this time schedule. A lack of participation will qualify as grounds for removal from the board.
For this commission, Nicholson is seeking applicants with knowledgeable backgrounds in conservation including biology, botany, land reclamation, community-space development, resource management, environmental science or others with professional expertise related to conservation work.
On the Citizens Advisory Board (CAB), members are tasked with reviewing applications for grant funding for community development.
“This board plays an important role in determining the funds that are distributed to organizations in the city in an informed and equitable way,” Nicholson said.
The CAB meets infrequently several times a year to review funding applications and decide on distribution.
Applicants for this board must have knowledge and/or background related to budgeting, grants, community development, and equitable community decision making.
Some examples of backgrounds or associations that are preferred for this commission include business owners and managers, community leaders, accountants, equity activists, or others with professional experience in community development.
