LYNN — A car crashed into a multi-family house on Hollingsworth Street late Monday afternoon, causing damage to the home and sending two people to the hospital.
The crash occurred at 75 Hollingsworth St. at approximately 3:45 p.m. The car was gone by 4 p.m., but it had left visible damage to the front of the home and its porch. The front gate of the house and the first three stairs were destroyed by the car, according to Lynn Fire Chief Stephen Archer.
The interior of the house was not damaged and the seven residents of the home were not injured. The man driving the vehicle was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. The man’s son was not injured, but was also taken to the hospital as a precaution, Archer said.
Witnesses said the car, a black Honda, had been speeding down Acorn Street when it suddenly crashed into the house. The car sustained heavy front-end damage and pieces of the vehicle were left at the scene, Archer said.
Board-Up Kingz, a fire-damage repair service, responded to fix the gate and stairs of the home. Repairs were expected to be finished on Monday night.
“We will be able to get back in tonight,” said David Callejas, a resident who lives at the home with his parents, sister, and nieces. “In all, the gate itself is the most damaged part of the house.”
Callejas said the family would be able to return to the home through its back door. While he wasn’t home during the crash, his parents were, he said.
Matilde Callejas, David’s mother, was in the house during the crash and said she felt the entire room shake as the car went through the fence. She said she was shocked when it happened, but tried to stay calm as she went outside through the back of the house.
Floriencio Callejas, David’s father, was in his car next to the house when he noticed the black Honda speed past him. It appeared as if the driver had lost control and could not stop, he said, adding that he was surprised at how fast the crash occurred.
“It zoomed past fast,” he said. “It looks like it damaged the gate the most, though.”
