To the editor:
The recent article in the Daily Item series, “Finding Mary,” has shed some light on the history of the abolitionists and Lynn citizens who fought in the Civil War, and are buried in Pine Grove Cemetery.
The article’s focus on the struggles for the elimination of slavery and those who fought hard to end it makes me think of Lynn’s hidden gem — the Grand Army of the Republic building located at 58 Andrew St.
In 1979, the building, with its extensive Civil War museum, was listed on the National Historic Register.
Unfortunately, a great deal of effort and funds are needed to restore the building and clean its historic artifacts.
Federal and state funds are needed to restore the interior and exterior and pay for an elevator to be installed to make the building handicap accessible.
I call upon Mayor Nicholson and our state legislative delegation to reach out to U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton and U.S. Sens. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren to view first-hand what’s needed to bring the Grand Army of the Republic back to life.
