Salem Academy board appoints new chair

Allysha Dunnigan

January 26, 2022 by Allysha Dunnigan

SALEM — The Board of Trustees for the Salem Academy Charter School voted to appoint Mekka Smith, former secretary of the board, to become the new chair of the Board of Trustees.

Smith is a Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) candidate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Originally from Atlanta, Ga., Smith started teaching in 2007 through Teach For America (TFA), where she worked with first and second-grade students in Miami, Fla. for five years.

In 2012, she joined the Teach For America-Massachusetts regional team and spent the next few years coaching teachers in elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as supporting TFA alumni to find high-impact, school-based roles in local district and charter schools.

Executive Director of Salem Academy Charter School Stephanie Callahan said the school is fortunate to have Smith as the new chair of the board.

“Her experience in education and commitment to equity brings so much to our community,” Callahan said. “We are excited for her leadership in this next chapter of our history.”

Smith is in her second term as a Salem Academy trustee, which began in January 2018 and will continue through December 2023. Smith’s term as chair began on Jan. 1 and will continue through her time as a trustee.

“I’m thrilled to step into this role and collaborate with Stephanie and the rest of the board to support and affirm the incredible work of Salem Academy staff and families on behalf of our students,” Smith said. “I’m looking forward to doing my part to contribute to the school’s strong legacy to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Smith’s first meeting as chair will be on Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Salem Academy Charter School opened to sixth- and seventh-graders in September 2004 to serve the diverse population of Salem, and now serves more than 490 students in grades six through 12.

The school integrates college-preparatory classes with service to the community, and its mission is to graduate informed, articulate, and proactive individuals of strong character.
